Data center corridor · Elk Grove Village, Aurora, Northlake and DeKalb, Illinois
Chicago is the largest data center market in the Midwest, with campuses along I-88 and in the western suburbs. Heavy equipment moves by road from Indiana and Wisconsin, or from the Illinois River ports.
A hyperscale campus takes dozens of loads that do not fit a standard trailer: substation transformers at 100,000 to 400,000 lbs, backup generators at 12 to 14 ft high on the skid, switchgear and power modules that are legal-weight but over-width, and chillers and cooling towers that are wide and tall. Every one of them needs a permit in each state it crosses, and most need pilot cars. The permit is the small part; the escorts, route surveys and the specialized truck are where the cost sits.
| State | Legal height | First pilot car | Pole car | Superload at | Travel | Permit lead |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Illinois | 13 ft 6 in | over 14 ft 6 in | over 14 ft 6 in | 15 ft 6 in wide / 150,000 lbs | Daylight only | ~1 day |
| Indiana | 13 ft 6 in | over 12 ft 4 in | over 14 ft 6 in | 17 ft wide / 200,000 lbs | Daylight only | ~1 day |
| Wisconsin | 13 ft 6 in | over 15 ft | over 16 ft | 16 ft wide / 150,000 lbs | Night allowed | ~1 day |
| Iowa | 13 ft 6 in | over 14 ft 6 in | over 14 ft 6 in | 14 ft 6 in wide / 156,000 lbs | Night allowed | ~1 day |
Click a state for its full rules: two-car triggers, length limits, weekend and holiday restrictions, permit fees and timing. Illinois and Indiana are daylight-only, which sets the pace of a multi-day move.
A worked example priced by the FreightDeck engine in September 2026: a 40 ft x 12 ft x 12 ft 6 in transformer skid, 61,000 lbs, on a stretch RGN (14 ft 6 in loaded), moving Gary, IN to Aurora, IL (85 miles).
| Cost | Estimate |
|---|---|
| State permits + filing (2 states) | $156 |
| Everything else before the truck (escorts, police, survey as required) | $0 |
| Permits and escorts, before the truck | $156 |
A 200,000 lb transformer on a 13-axle trailer is a superload on this route and prices very differently: route survey, engineering review, police escorts. Price the actual piece to see it.
Enter the piece and the lane. FreightDeck returns the trailer, the permits for every state, the escorts, and the truck rate, and exports a customer-ready quote with your logo.
Price a load free →Any load over 8 ft 6 in wide, over 13 ft 6 in high (the lowest legal height on this route, Illinois), or over 80,000 lbs gross needs a permit in every state it crosses. A utility-scale transformer is over on all three.
Usually one to two, plus a pole car for tall loads. The strictest width trigger on this route is over 12 ft 4 in in Indiana. Above about 16 ft wide or 200,000 lbs most states treat it as a superload with police escorts and a route survey.
Routine permits issue in one to three business days per state. Superloads take one to three weeks because an engineer reviews the route and every bridge. Plan the permit lead time into the equipment delivery schedule, not after the transformer ships.
